My experience has been that you must sell yourself first and foremost, people must buy you, trust you and what you stand for before you can "sell" them anything.
Being honest, respectful and able to communicate are the keys to being a great salesperson. Always be honest and find out what their needs and wants are; give them what they want and you will get what you want.
